Muskoka Education Centre Opens for New School Year

Muskoka Education Centre Opens for New School Year

Salter Pilon Architecture is pleased to announce that the Muskoka Education Centre project, designed for the Trillium Lakelands District School Board, reached substantial completion in August, followed by the Board staff taking possession of the building shortly thereafter.

The new 24,650 square foot administration building, located on Cedar Lane, will replace the current facility leased from the District Municipality of Muskoka on Pine Street and the R.S. Claus Resource Centre on Victoria Street in Bracebridge.

The LEED Silver design was based on classic Muskoka architectural charm, featuring, heavy timber mortice and tenon framing in both the covered entrance and entrance lobby. Combining both natural stone and rich pine siding into the exterior facade lent itself to carrying a high level of finish into the building where large skylights bring in light to reflect off the natural materials. With both form and function this building will house approximately 50 administration staff, resource management, and a cutting edge IT department with server space. Using local building materials and methods, including ICF foundations/walls and a wood framed roofing system, an elegant and cost effective building was achieved.

As part of the design of the new Muskoka Education Centre, three large meeting rooms were designed for both TLDSB meetings as well as community use.  Lake-inspired names for the rooms include The Vernon Room, Joseph Room, and Rosseau Room based on the local area lakes.  Each of these rooms has a moveable partition that can allow for a much larger space, The Muskoka Lakes Room, which can accommodate up to 288 people.  This new space will alleviate board costs for rented space at other facilities for professional development of teachers and other staff.
