Long Term Care

In 1985 we began work on our first long-term care project, the105 bed redevelopment of Georgian Manor Home for the Aged in Penetanguishene. Breaking into long-term care design was by no means simple.

From that initial tentative beginning, we have been involved with over 20 long-term care projects, which provide in excess of 2500 long-term care beds and approximately 250 supportive/independent lifestyle units. Our experience has taught us to think like seniors, to act like staff, and above all to care.

Sheridan Villa Redevelopment

Mississauga

The Region of Peel’s largest long-term care home is undergoing renovations to meet the current standards of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The total redevelopment of this existing 130,000 square foot, long-term care centre will necessitate a downsizing of the home from the current 236 bed capacity (“C” classification) to 142 beds (“A” classification). Redevelopment will occur primarily within the 4 storey existing building envelope in three distinct construction phases. New construction includes expansion of lounge and activity spaces and a one storey greenhouse. Input from residents, staff, volunteers and family members were all incorporated into the redevelopment of the home. Special design considerations, including added security features, larger suite layouts and enclosed ground level courtyards, were given to residents who suffer from Alzheimer’s, dementia and cognitive impairments. Continued operations of the main kitchen, laundry, administrative services and other facility support spaces were paramount when considering the phasing and staging of the redevelopment. Down time of these essential services will be minimized or avoided by redevelopment of adjacent spaces to accommodate these operations while existing systems remain in place. This $ 21.73 million (tender) project is currently under construction and Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed in December 2007
