This is a fast track project utilized the Design-Build construction process in order to provide the best possible design, value and return for the City of Ottawa within an accelerated delivery schedule. Contract documentation occured over a 14 week period while construction of site services and foundations took place. The 77,000 square foot complex offers a range of community and recreation facilities, including a fitness facility, two large gymnasiums, an eight-lane 25 meter pool and leisure pool/whirl pool, community rooms and various multipurpose rooms. The site layout provides outdoor recreation areas including 2 large artificial turf sport fields, a children’s play area with splash pad, two basketball courts and a skateboard board plaza. The complex takes advantage of existing trails and provides users with an outdoor education centre as well as cross-country ski trails for use in the winter months. To achieve a LEED Gold certification, design considerations included solar panels, ground source heating and cooling, as well as a grey water water heat recovery system for the pool and showers areas. A green roof is located on the south-west corner of the building directly over the pool change-rooms. The storm water management plan for this site incorporates areas to recycle and filter grey water, as well as an efficient irrigation system. This project was awarded the Ontario Wood Works! 2014 Green Building Wood Design Award.
