Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is a 122-bed hospital with sites located in the municipalities of Midland and Penetanguishene. After completing master planning for the two sites, we were then selected to proceed with the MOHLTC Capital Planning process for a $15 million redevelopment of the emergency department and another $12 million expansion/renovation to the mental health area. Each project involves a multi-phased approach to the construction in these occupied facilities.
The GBGH Emergency Department currently sees 40,000 patients per year in an area last re-designed in the early 1990s to treat 18,000 people. In order to meet the needs of the 40,000 patients currently being seen today in the cramped department, the organization has developed ‘work-arounds’ to meet standards. To say this emergency department was not built for the volumes it is currently experiencing, let alone what it will face in the future, is an understatement. The Emergency Department expansion/renovation is occurring in three phases. Now completed, the first phase utilized the construction management method of project management and involved demolition of a portion of the existing building and a new expansion. This included a new triage registration and waiting area, a trauma suite, two central communications areas, five treatment rooms, 2 secure observation rooms (for the treatment of local high risk patients from the Central North Correctional and Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care), an isolation exam room and a new separate ambulance entrance. The second phase will include the addition of a 4 vehicle ambulance bay which will connect the new addition to a neighbouring building. The third phase will involve a renovation within the existing structure to create an expanded triage waiting area, a "see and treat" zone, an observation unit, and additional treatment rooms. We are currently preparing a resubmission of Stage 3.2 for the MOHLTC with construction anticipated to begin in the summer of 2015.
The Mental Health expansion/renovation is currently in a schematic design stage. We have started the submission process with the MOHLTC which currently sits at the Stage 2 level. This 17,000 sq.ft. project will see the renovation of 9,000 sq.ft. and the addition of 8,000 sq.ft on level 1 of the existing hospital. The Mental Health Department will facilitate an Inpatient Unit and Day Treatment Program with shared and separated spaces. the Inpatient Unit will have four single occupancy bedrooms in an Extra Care Area and 18 additional single bedrooms, with supporting program and clinical spaces. This addition will receive two new connection points linking the department back to GBGH.
