Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
Thunder Bay, Ontario

This 375 bed acute care hospital was delivered using a fast track construction management process, allowing design to continue on concurrently with construction, reducing the overall project delivery schedule by over three and a half years.  The 686,000 sq.ft. project also included the 68,000 square foot Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre.  There were a number of innovations incorporated into the design including the use of skylights within the cancer radiation treatment bunkers, a first in Canada, and the use of wood as a major structural element within the main atrium space, a first in Ontario.  We were successful in negotiating with the Building Department and the Ontario Fire Marshall as the building code does not allow wood to be used in hospitals by introducing an advanced Fog Fire Suppression System to Canada.  The project also incorporated a number of sustainable design features, including the use of passive solar strategies and innovative stormwater management design through the use of a series of linked pond structures.  It was also one of the first hospitals in the country to bring daylight into the heart of traditionally dark nursing stations for the benefit of the staff, who work long shifts, and the patients.   This award winning project was completed by Salter Farrow Pilon Architects Inc.
