Gross Floor Area
152,300 sq. ft.

East Bayfield Community Centre was envisioned as a cornerstone of Barrie’s growing north end, a place where recreation, wellness, and community gathering could thrive under one roof. Designed to serve residents of all ages, the facility provides a year-round destination that balances aquatic, fitness, and social programming with cost-efficient operations.

The 152,300 sq. ft. complex includes an eight-lane, 25-metre lap pool, a beach-entry leisure pool, therapy pool, and family changerooms supported by pool viewing galleries and universal access features. A dividable double gymnasium and fully equipped fitness centre anchor the recreation wing, complemented by multi-purpose community rooms, administrative offices, and a hospitality space for public events. Childcare needs were integrated early in the planning, resulting in a 3,250 sq. ft. daycare suite with its own secure outdoor play area.

Technical innovation played a key role in the project’s delivery. The design incorporated geothermal heating systems to recover and redistribute excess heat within the building, improving energy performance and reducing operating costs. Heated entryways and durable finishes ensure safety and comfort during winter months. Through proactive collaboration with the contractor, the project achieved significant savings, allowing the City to deliver a landmark community facility within budget that continues to enrich Barrie’s civic portfolio.
