Saint Gabriel the Archangel Catholic School

Set on a six-acre site in the south end of Barrie, this elementary school was designed to accommodate 540 pupils.

01

The Plan

Our work on this project began with a feasibility study for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. The study formulated a plan for the creation of a new elementary school and child care centre to serve the growing south end community.

Originally conceived as a two-storey school, unforeseen conditions with the site necessitated a re-evaluation of the plan.

The Process

Our team earned invaluable expertise in school programming and stacking on this project. Working in collaboration with the School Board, we undertook a process that successfully transposed a two-storey layout into a three-storey layout. A series of intensive programming workshops resulted in a reduced footprint, and an efficient multi-storey layout, all delivered without an extension to the schedule.

The Solution

The layout of this 59,600 sq. ft. school includes 24 classrooms, 3 kindergartens, 1 special education suite, a gymnasium with stage area, a library resource centre, and a Best Start child care suite. The focal point of the school is a 2-storey chapel/guidance space.
