The 203,000 square foot project utilized, the original Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, which was renovated and retrofitted to become a state-of-the-art facility.  Victoria Village exemplifies reduce, reuse and recycle principles. Over 96% of the project floor area consists of alterations to the existing hospital building and new construction represents only 4% of the total. The new facility includes 128 long term care (LTC) beds (including dementia and palliative care), an adult day care centre, a City of Barrie operated senior activity centre (including a woodshop, a library resource centre, a computer room and fitness centre), a supportive housing complex with 57 life-lease units, a community banquet and meeting facility, a therapeutic garden, over 19,000 square feet of commercial space, a non-denominational chapel and rental office space for a variety of public service community organizations. In August 2003, it was announced the project had won the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s 2003 Peter J. Marshall Innovative Award. The project was chosen over 29 other submissions because it demonstrated excellence in the use of innovative approaches, alternative service delivery initiatives and partnerships to improve capital and operating efficiency in the delivery of municipal programs and services.Victoria Village has been described as, “...a visionary and innovative community project for people, which sets new standards for the addition of value through reuse.”
