Norm & Jessie Dysart Radiation Centre – Cancer Bunker

Location
Peterborough, ON
Completion Date
2013
Sustainable Goals
Gross Floor Area
4,000 sq. ft.

For cancer patients across Peterborough and the Kawarthas, the Norm & Jessie Dysart Radiation Centre turns what was once a long, stressful trip out of town into a familiar visit to their regional hospital. Designed by Salter Pilon Architecture as a specialized addition to Peterborough Regional Health Centre, the 4,000 sq.ft. expansion brings advanced radiation therapy close to home, integrating seamlessly with existing cancer services so patients can move smoothly from diagnosis to treatment within one campus.

At the core is a heavily shielded bunker housing a linear accelerator, engineered for radiation safety, precise environmental control and reliable power. Surrounding spaces emphasize comfort with daylight, warm finishes and intuitive wayfinding, while the exterior ties into PRHC’s broader architectural language. Supported by community philanthropy, the centre now serves hundreds each year—strengthening PRHC’s role as a regional cancer-care hub and reflecting Salter Pilon’s commitment to patient-focused healthcare design.
