Salter Pilon Architecture had been engaged by Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) to complete a Master Plan for their sites in Midland and Penetanguishene. Following approval to proceed with the MoHLTC Capital Planning process, the Midland Hospital underwent major addition and renovation for the expansion of its Emergency Department.

The master planning process with GBGH and department participants had previously identified a three-phase implementation process to accommodate the internal funding model and the Ministry’s capital approval. A collaborative engagement with the boots-on-the-ground team and senior management established the priorities that supported both financial objectives and the critical facility needs, with subsequent construction phasing to achieve all building improvements.
Utilizing a Construction Management delivery model for the first phase, the Hospital underwent partial demolition with a 7,000 sq. ft. addition and was managed under strict control to remain operational. This expansion included a new triage registration and waiting area, a trauma suite, two central communications areas, five (5) treatment rooms, two (2) secure observation rooms (for the treatment of local high-risk patients from the Central North Correctional and Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care), an isolation exam room, and a new separate ambulance entrance.
The second phase included the addition of a 3,200 sq. ft. four-vehicle ambulance bay that connects the new addition to a neighbouring building.

The third phase saw approximately 12,000 sq. ft. of renovated space within the existing structure plus a small addition. The layout includes an expanded triage waiting area with a child play area, a “see and treat” zone, an observation unit, ten (10) additional treatment rooms to complement the phase one acute care area, an administrative services suite, and ER staff changerooms.
The expansion of the emergency department enhances the capabilities of the Hospital’s service and was delivered during a significant period of community growth.
